Light units may seem lightweight whilst holding them in your hands but when they are attached to your loupe frame and you are wearing them for extended periods of time, this light can become quite uncomfortable. When trying a light on, it is important to try it with your loupes, be sure they are comfortable and that you feel you could wear them all day long. Most companies will offer a trial and this is the best way to be sure you are happy with the light.

If you buy a light with your loupes, it should come attached neatly to the frame in a way that is comfortable to wear and can be easily adjusted so the beam is lighting up the area in view.

If you buy a light as an addition to your loupes later, you need to make sure there is an option to attach the light neatly. We supply several different brackets for assorted brands so that we can attach our lights to any frame.

Colour

You may hear lights being described as ‘warm’ or ‘cool,’ which refers to the colour temperature of the light unit. This is measured in a unit called Kelvin. Generally speaking, the lower the Kelvin, the warmer and more orange the light is. The higher the kelvin the cooler and bluer the light is. The colour of the light can change the way people perceive different surfaces. A warmer light gives surfaces a more ‘natural’ feel but cannot always highlight finer detail. A colder light will give detail but will make surfaces seem unnatural.

People perceive light colour differently and the best type of light would depend on personal preference and type of work being undertaken. Most users will focus more on the intensity of the beam rather than the colour.

Intensity

You may hear light intensity being measured in Lumens, LUX, Candela and other terms. Lumens describes the power of the light source and LUX is the intensity of the light source falling over a defined area. In simple terms the higher the number, the brighter the light will be. However, it is important lights are not too bright as this can damage patient’s eyes. Light units in the region of 40-60K Lux are deemed the standard.

Wireless or Wired

Batteries are forever getting smaller, more powerful and longer lasting. In recent years, we have been able to take advantage of this and develop a wireless light unit. The wireless light unit does away with the battery in your tunic and a wire over the arms of your loupes. They are comfortable to wear, less likely to get tangled and are more aesthetically pleasing. However, they are slightly heavier as the battery is on the frame – the battery is lighter though so it is not as noticeable as you would imagine. As the batteries are smaller, the burn time is not as great. To combat this, wireless units often come with two or three batteries so that at least one will always be charged.

Battery life

Most wired units would give you at least 8 hours of light meaning that you could then charge the light overnight ready for the next day. All our units come with one battery, as this is normally all that is required. Extra batteries are optional if you had an exceptionally long day or you were wanting a spare battery for an emergency. Wireless units are slightly different as the batteries are smaller and consequently will not last as long. To combat this, wireless units will come with extra batteries so there will always be at least one battery charged and ready to be used.

Department of Health Guidance for Decontamination

I’m sure you are well aware of the Department of Health Guidance for Decontamination in primary care dental practices. It makes clear that loupes are reusable if properly cleaned according to the manufactures guidelines. It also states that loupes should be cleaned when they are “…visibly dirty and/or at the end of each session.” . It also understands that this may not be easy as loupes have small components which can be difficult to clean between sessions.

This often means that loupes are either never cleaned or given a cursory wipe down when they look “a bit dirty”. What we want to do here is give you some practical and quick options to enable you to keep your loupes in fantastic condition in the easiest possible way.

Loupes have small and sometimes moveable parts. Coupled with the fact they are spending along time on your face meaning that they can become dirty with hair gel, make up, sweat and not to mention day to dust and other splashes and splatters during patient treatment. When looked at closely you’ll quickly realise that they can easily become an infection risk to that would un glue a well managed practice.

So what can’t we do?

It is a good idea first to look at what me mustn’t do. They may sound obvious but you would be be surprised.

Be careful you don’t submerge your loupes in water as the optical units are not waterproof and drying these parts and the frame hinges can cause damage and misting.

Never use autoclaves or any other sterilising equipment as this would potential damage your loupes beyond repair.

Avoid using sprays if possible as we want to avoid getting any moisture into the optical barrels.

Steer clear of using cotton wipes as the heavy cloth over prolonged periods may cause the optics or the lens to become scratched.

What can we do? Creating a routine is what it is about.

Hopefully the ideas below will give you some thought as to how you can incorporate them into your practice and keep your loupes working as long as you do.

Keep an eye on your loupes. It may be the case you are able to clean them between a couple or few patients at a time depending on the work you are doing.

Removing debris. This is best done with compressed air. Carefully direct this towards the area that are hard to reach and have the potential for build up. Specifically, nose piece and bridge, frame hinge arms, under optic barrels and the hinge mechanism if using flip up loupes.

Cleaning. You don’t need a ‘specialist loupe wipe’ – you can clean and disinfect your loupes using products you would normally use to wipe down surfaces and furniture. Just remember to be not too liberal.

Drying. Leaving them then to air dry or again using some compressed air at a distance will help with the drying process. That is it you are ready for your next patient.

Having a process like this in place will quickly become habit and will look after your loupe so that your loupes can work at looking after you and your patience

Historically loupes companies would send representatives to practices and homes across the country. Here they would take a number of measurements to build your loupes and let you try on a choice of frames and optics. One of the principle ways we are able to build high quality loupes at affordable prices is by providing an alternative to the historical method of taking measurements.

Ideally you will need to sit in your working environment with a good upright posture and a strong core. Ensure you are not hunched over or sitting in a position that is not normal or comfortable for you. If you have worked without loupes for many years take extra consideration to ensure that you are sitting with a straight back, we want to make sure that your new loupes prevent further or future back pain and problems.

Then, holding a measuring tape between the corner of your eye and the area you are working in take a maximum and minimum reading taking consideration for larger/smaller patients or particular work you undertake that may affect your positioning. Have a photo taken of this position with the tape measure in place as in the image below. It can be sensible to remeasure this 2-3 times to make sure you are getting the same/a similar reading every time.

Every working distance has a focal trough or otherwise known as depth of field, this is the range that one can focus within at a specific working distance. This is usually 7-8cms above or below your optimum working distance. This depth of field usually reduces as the magnification increases. Getting the right working distance ensures you sit correctly with a good posture, if you start to lean forward or slump the image will become unclear, hence the correct working distance disciplines you to adopt the correct posture.

Marmite? Love it or hate it, it divides opinion. Choosing between flip ups and through the lens loupes (TTLs) can have the same affect. Especially for a first pair of loupes you will have probably heard fellow colleagues and class mates swear by both.

We are asked a lot “What is the difference?”. As it is such a personal choice depending on the individual’s specific needs it is very difficult to give a definitive answer. What we have done in this blog post is tried to clearly define the positives and negatives of both to give you some structure to your decision-making process.

Flip up loupes have been around for a long time and offer different benefits to that of TTL’s. Flip-ups can be mounted on an existing pair of prescription glasses, one of our frames, or a head band. The idea is the same for each – the optics are mounted on hinge system so that they can be adjusted easily and flipped up out of the way when not in use.

Advantages of Flip-Up Loupes

The loupe barrels can be flipped up out of the field of view of the user. The user can then have better facetime with their patients, clearly see computer screens, tools and charts with out the need to remove the loupes as you may have to with TTLs.

Angle of declination can be adjusted depending on the type of work being undertaken. As TTLs the optics are fixed in the frame then flip ups give a greater degree of flexibility if the user is undertaking tasks that require movement from a normal sitting position.
As flip ups require less customisation then they come with a lower price compared to TTL loupes.

Flip ups are highly adjustable and as such can be used between several people. This makes them an ideal choice of loupes to have as a training aid or in a setting where several people may be working with them.

Easy to change and replace – as flip-ups are not customised it is very easy to swap the magnification barrels for stronger/weaker ones, they are also very easy to repair as all the parts and components on them are replaceable and generic.

Disadvantages of Flip-Up Loupes

Due to the hinge mechanism on the frames and the larger optics the flip up loupes will be heavier than a pair of TTL’s. The fact that the weight of the unit sits primarily on the bridge of the frame will make the unit feel front heavy.

The field of view will be reduced as the optical barrels are sitting further away from your pupil. The slight increase in distance will mean that the working area is slightly reduced where compared to a similar level of magnification on a pair of TTLs.

Adjusting flip-up loupes often needs to be done on a regular basis to ensure a single image is achieved where as TTL’s never need adjusting once they are made.

TTL loupes are a technological step forward from flip ups. They produced the same result when working under magnification but offer a more comfortable and quality pair of loupes. The optics are mounted within the carrier lens and are built to a very high specification based on several measurements taken form the client’s eyes and head shape.

Advantages of TTL loupes

TTL loupes do not require a hinge mechanism and can be built into smaller barrels making them much lighter weight. TTL loupes have the optics built into the carrier lens which means you don’t have the frontal weight compared to a pair of flip ups. In all this makes TTLs very aesthetically pleasing.

Each pair of loupes is fully bespoke to the individual’s facial features. We take several measurements including interpupillary distance, ear/nose height, face width and working distance amongst others. This enables us to build the most ergonomically pair of loupes for the individual that will require no adjustments and enable the best possible working position.

As the barrels of TTL loupes sit much closer to the eyes then the depth and width of view through the loupes is greatly increased compared to a pair of flip up loupes.

Disadvantages of TTL Loupes:

As these loupes are personalised for individuals it is not often possible to share them with colleagues. It is also difficult to send ‘demo’ loupes as it wouldn’t always be possible to send you exact specification. If a demo paired of TTLs would be required, then we would send you a best fit but would ask if you would remember that it would be a true representation of what a bespoke pair of loupes would be like.

As TTL loupes are built to a much higher specification requiring multiple manufacturing processes the price for these loupes is higher than a pair of flip up loupes.

If you wish to increase your level of magnification in years to come this won’t be possible as the loupes and optics are bespoke/customised and cannot be easily changed. It would usually be a case of buying a new pair of loupes.

Hopefully this has provided you with some information that will facilitate your choice in what loupes you require. To Help with the decision-making process, at UKloupes we can send some demo loupes for you to try on a 10 day risk-free trial period in what ever specification you would like. We also offer a 30-day money back or adjustment guarantee then means once you have your loupes from us you still have plenty of options available to you.
Often overlooked, dental loupes are an essential part of dentistry offering a wealth of benefits. Here are 5 reasons

Better Visual Acuity

One of the many challenges in dental field is viewing the microscopic details of the teeth. Even if you boast 20:20 vision, such details require magnification, and dental loupes provide the user with vision which is far superior to that which could be achieved naturally.

Improved Posture & Reduced Back Pain

It is known that dentists are at high risk of musculoskeletal pain with studies reporting 70% of dentists experiencing lower back pain & nearly a third forced into premature retirement.
Fortunately, maintaining an ergonomic posture is easy with a good fitting set of dental loupes. They provide a magnified view of the mouth; eliminating the desire to move closer to the patient.

Reduced Eye Strain

The symptoms can be unpleasant, resulting in fatigue, sore eyes and headaches. Working in the dental field, you are required to concentrate for long periods of time on the small details on the teeth. Made to measure dental loupes reduce eyestrain, magnifying all aspects of the mouth.

Save Time

Enhanced magnification not only assists with your vision but also allows you to do more in less time. Allowing you to work with precision and accuracy, and at a faster pace.

Improved Diagnosis

To provide your patient with the most accurate diagnosis, it is vital that you can view your working field with clear, crisp vision. As dental loupes magnify the image greatly, users can easily see details which are not visible to the naked eye.

Loupes come in several different magnifications depending on the work being undertaken and the individual user’s preference. You will often meet a range of opinions, some people have three or four pairs of loupes with a variety of different magnifications, from their first pair of x2.5 magnification loupes at dental school to their x5.0 magnification pair of prismatic loupes they are now using for Endo work. Essentially there isn’t a right or wrong level of magnification to choose however in our opinion it’s often advisable to start with a lower level of magnification and then gradually increase to a higher level of magnification in line with specialising in your particular path in dentistry.

Guide to choosing the most suitable magnification for your loupes

Loupes come in several different magnifications depending on the work being undertaken and the individual user’s preference. You will often meet a range of opinions, some people have three or four pairs of loupes with a variety of different magnifications, from their first pair of x2.5 magnification loupes at dental school to their x5.0 magnification pair of prismatic loupes they are now using for Endo work. Essentially there isn’t a right or wrong level of magnification to choose however in our opinion it’s often advisable to start with a lower level of magnification and then gradually increase to a higher level of magnification in line with specialising in your particular path in dentistry.

In this blog post we aim to provide you with some information to enable you to make the most informed choice when it comes to choosing the right magnification for you and your work.

For general day to day dentistry work most clients use 2.5-3.5x magnification. This gives a good overall field of view of the working area whilst being able to have some level of detail on specific areas. Naturally, a higher level of magnification loupes is then often purchased at a later date as a second pair of loupes or for one who is specialising in a specific line of dentistry such as Endodontics. It is important to remember than as the level of magnification increases, the field of view decreases, so there is always a balance between choosing a magnification that provides a good level of detail along with enough peripheral image to continue working in an effective and efficient way.

Below we have photographed the different levels of magnification for you to see the level of detail and field of view for each increment. You can use this infographic to help with the decision on the best choice of loupes for your work.

As mentioned above, a key consideration when choosing the power of your loupes is that as magnification increases the width and depth of view decreases by about 5-10mm for each increment. The highest level will give you the greatest detail but reduced depth and field of view. The lowest magnification level will give you less detail but the largest depth and field of view. It is a common mistake for first time loupe users to overestimate the level of magnification required for a first pair of loupes. Common misconceptions such as ‘if I’m buying loupes I better make it worth it’ and ‘bigger image, better quality of work’ are still present among first time loupe users of all ages.

To give you an idea of the most popular choice of magnification we have looked back over a decade of selling loupes and most of the purchases have been broken down as follows:

Cardiff University Enterprise catches up with Dave and Dan to discuss the business and the future!

UKloupes is a medical supplies business formed by Cardiff graduates Dan Keil and David Stone that supplies dental loupes. Speaking to Cardiff University Enterprise, Dan explained the science behind dental loupes. “Loupes provide the user with an enhanced magnified image of what they are looking at, helping the user to improve their quality of work and dental treatment.”

He added that they helped to ensure users sit with proper posture, preventing the onset of back problems and neck pain. “Essentially, loupes are an advanced magnification tool that allow those operating on intricate work areas to enhance their vision.”

The company is now a highly successful business based in Bristol that markets its products across the country. Products are assembled and distributed at their head office, and the company prides itself on exceptional service both before and after a sale is made. UKloupes began when David Stone, then an undergraduate dentistry student, identified a need for cheaper equipment, both for students and active professionals.
